SEVP-Certified, Accredited, STEM-Designated:

These three terms get used interchangeably by agents and even by some schools. They mean different things, and confusing them is how students end up in programs that do not do what they expected.
SEVP-Certified

ICE certifies schools to enroll F-1 students and issue Form I-20. This is about immigration authority, not academic quality. A school without it cannot issue your I-20.

Accredited

Accreditation comes from a recognized academic body, not the government. It is what makes your degree count with employers and other universities. Check both.

STEM-Designated

A program is STEM when its CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. It attaches to the program, not the school, and it opens the 24-month STEM OPT extension.

Accredited Hybrid Bachelor's and Master's Degrees

Our partner universities offer accredited bachelor’s and master’s STEM programs in a hybrid format, combining scheduled on-campus classes with supported coursework in between. Programs with CPT (Curricular Practical Training) are also available, so you can gain U.S. work experience as part of your curriculum.

Hybrid does not mean online. F-1 rules allow only one class, or three credits, per session to count toward your full course of study when that class has no in-person attendance. Every program Omar & Co Consulting recommends meets the in-person requirement, so your enrollment holds up.

Questions Before You Get Started?

What is the difference between an SEVP-certified school and an accredited school?
SEVP certification means a school is approved to enroll F-1 students and issue Form I-20. Accreditation means a recognized body has reviewed the school’s academic quality. You need to check both.
Only in a limited way. F-1 rules allow one class, or three credits, per session online to count toward a full course of study, so most of your coursework must be in person.
It may be possible, but timing and your circumstances matter. You generally cannot start classes until the change is approved. We prepare your documents and connect you with an attorney to review your case.
F-2 spouses generally cannot study full-time. Limited recreational study may be allowed, and full-time study usually requires a change to F-1 status. An attorney can confirm what applies to your family.
F-1 students may be eligible for 12 months of OPT, plus a 24-month extension if the degree is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. That is up to 36 months, subject to approval.
Your options may include reinstatement or transfer, depending on the reason for termination. Act quickly. We help you gather documents and work with the school on a new I-20, and an independent attorney can advise on your legal options.
